The Jews in Kaifeng: Reflections on Sino-Judaic History / (Monographs of the Jewish Historical Society of Hong Kong)
Mr. S.J. Chan was a career Administrative Officer in the Hong Kong Civil Service. His Involvement with Chinese historical research began in 1963 as a member of the Seminar on Contemporary China, University of Hong Kong. He began his research on the Chinese Jews of Kaifeng in 1974 and made two visits to Kaifeng in 1981 and 1983. Between 1983 to 1985 Mr. Chan gave lectures in Universities and institutions in Hong Kong, Philippines and Taiwan on this subject. In April 1984 he delivered this paper at the Beth Hatefutsoth, the Museum of the Jewish Diaspora, in Tel Aviv at the special exhibition on "The Jews by the Yellow River". Mr. Chan received his degree in Economics and Political Science at the University of Hong Kong. He also received training in the Management College, Henley-on-Thames, England.
As a founding member of the Jewish Historical Society of Hong Kong, Mr. Chan has contributed greatly to its growth with his knowledge, his experience and his enthusiasm.
Mr Chan wrote the book East River Column: Hong Kong Guerrillas in the Second World War and After.
