Zionism was a revolution led by young Eastern European Ashkenazi Jews who wanted to liberate themselves of their exclusion both as Jews and as non-Europeans - belonging to the Semitic race. After losing hope of assimilation into Europe as individuals, they came to Israel (then Palestine) to promote their assimilation into Europe as citizens of a European nation – Israel. The Zionist project of building Israel as a European nation thus included the exclusion of the Mizrahim (who are both very Jewish and non-Europeans) as an integral part of it.
