The Chess of China / Man’s fondness for intellectual challenge can be seen by his involvement with
games utilizing military strategy and tactics in their basic structure. Today,
there is a proliferation of such games. Many of the major wars and battles
throughout history have been translated into game-board expression. These
include Alexander’s clash with the Persians in the fourth century B.C., the
American War of Independence, Waterloo, the war between the States, WWI
aviation battles, and some of the major actions in WWII. Throughout world
history, however, the two most popular of such games are the Chess of the
Western world, and the Wei Ch’i of the East.1 This oriental game is known to
Westerners as the Japanese game of “Go”.
