The Jews in a Polish Private Town: The Case of Opatow in the Eighteenth Century / In the eighteenth century more than half of the jews in the world lived in Poland-Lithuania, and most of the Jews in that commonwealth lived in nibility-owned 'private'holdings like the town of Opatow. There they engaged in a variety of crafts and trades-from commerce, to textiles, to the manufacture and sale of alcohol. In many towns, as the economic downturn of the early eighteenth century worsened, Jews came to be virtually the only economically active element of the population.
