Israel Pocket Library: Education and Science / The all-embracing nature of the Jewish religion is one of its unique characteristics. It also explains why Judaism is so hard to describe succinctly. Its basis is a faith-but that faith is only the starting-point for a way of life and a complete culture. Indeed, there are Jews in the modern world who accept the culture but question the faith.
This book on "Jewish Values" is necessarily eclectic. An overall description of the ideology of Judaism is contained in the entries "Judaism" and "Articles of Faith" while the practical obligations are contained in full in "The 613 Commandments". But only a selection of subjects has been developed in the chapters following each general survey. Readers wishing to pursue amplification of other topics are referred to the Encyclopedia Judaica.
