1. About the Map Library

­The Map Library is a departmental library of the Department of Geography, The University of Hong Kong. Its comprehensive cartographic collection with particular emphasis on Hong Kong and East & Southeast Asia, is open for general use by current HKU staff and students as a reference centre to support teaching, learning and research activities.

2. Location

The Map Library is situated at Room 1010, 10th Floor, The Jockey Club Tower, Centennial Campus, Pokfulam Road, Hong Kong.

3. Collections (Maps, Charts, Atlases and other Special cartographic forms)

Library has a wide range of cartographic collections which are unique resources for teaching and research with over 45000 items:

  • Air photograph images & remote sensing maps (mainly of Hong Kong)
  • Map items (with particular emphasis on Hong Kong, East & Southeast Asia)
  • Dissertations (Full collection of Geography dissertations and postgraduate research theses from 1968 onward, with the oldest dissertation from the year 1960)
  • Atlases & guides
  • Numerous collections of videos, slide sets, marine charts, satellite images, journals, gazetteers, carto-bibliographies, audio tapes and CD-ROMs
  • Special cartographic format globes & terrain models and wall maps (e.g. Cloth-based or 3-dimensions relief molded plastic maps, etc.)

4. Opening Hours

This library is open for general University use as a reference centre. The opening hours are:

6. Borrower's Registration and Fees

All current departmental HKU staff and students are eligible users. They should apply for a Map Library Card with a validity period of 2 years (the date of 31st August in the 2nd year as the expiry date). Other users may also use the facilities of the Map Library after they register and apply for the Map Library Card. Details are as follows:

1. Download Borrowers' Registration Form.
2. Return completed application form in person.
3. A $20.00 processing fee is collected when you submit your application.

7. Services and Facilities

This library is open for access by ALL current HKU staff and students, and non-HKU users as a general cartographic reference centre (library use only). The following facilities/ services are provided for academic study and academic research purposes only.

Taking photographs in any forms are prohibited in the Library.

A self-service photocopying machine which provides photocopying services with A4 and A3 papers. (Users are required to comply with copyright guidelines.)

The above-listed charges are applicable to all Library users including registered Library users with valid Library Card.

Users are allowed to make photocopies of only a portion of the original materials for academic study and academic research, and must abide by the laws relating to copyright.  The Map Library staff has the right to refuse an order that is suspected to be directed for commercial use.

The above charges include copying materials necessary to produce a copy.  Clients who provide their own copying materials will also be charged according to the above charge scheme. The Map Library or its staff is not responsible for any damage to your originals.

9. Regulations Governing Map Library

In addition to the important guidelines on copyright, a number of other regulations apply regarding the use of the Map Library. These are listed in the following:

R1 Admission to the Library

(a) Admission to the Map Library is free for current HKU staff and students only. Other persons may be asked to present their valid Map Library Card by Library staff.

(b) Non-HKU users wishing access to or use of the Map Library for reference enquires only must first obtain the approval of Department Head in writing.

R2 Borrowing & Reading privileges

Current HKU staff and students with the possession of a valid HKU Map Library Card and other persons with the prior written approval of the Department Head can check out available materials for one day for in-house use.

No material of any kind may be taken out for use outside the Map Library at any time, or for any reason.


Full-time academic staff and part-time teaching staff, postgraduate students and honorary staff of the Department of Geography will be granted extra borrowing privileges.  However, such borrowing privileges DO NOT extend to sheet maps or aerial photographs which may not be removed from the Map Library at any time or for any reason. Any request for conditional exceptions requires approval of Department Head in writing.


R3 Damaged items

Any defect or damage caused to an item should be reported by the users to the Map Librarian immediately when this situation is noticed.  Users will be held responsible for loss or damage to any item whilst in their charge, and may be required to pay the full value of replacement.


R4 Reservation of places

Readers’ places may not be reserved. Any place not occupied by a person may be used by another, regardless of property left on the desk or chair. Library items and personal property left unattended on a desk for more than thirty minutes may be removed to the counter according to the instructions of library staff.


R5 Photocopying

(a) All maps, plans and photographs are subject to copyright protection where applicable. Reproduction in any form or media using all or part of these products without prior permission of the copyright holder is not allowed. Therefore, those using the copying machine in the Map Library should understand that they do so in such a manner which will not involve any breach of copyright.

(b) Any copying of copyrighted materials without the express permission of the copyright holder must be kept within the scope of fair dealing for the purposes of reference, research or private study under the copyright legislation currently in force in Hong Kong.

(c) In cases involving reproduction of multiple copies of maps, it is recommended that users first obtain copyright permission from map producers with information such as title, nature, and format of materials used, name of applicant, reference numbers of maps or photos to be reproduced and the size of extract measured from the original and print-run quantity. The permission for reproduction is normally given on payment of a prescribed copyright fee and inclusion of an acknowledgment in the publication.

(d) If these copyright guidelines are not followed, users may render themselves liable to legal action for breach of copyright.

R6 Exclusion

(a) Borrowers who refuse to pay for items lost while on loan to them or who consistently refuse to pay fines accrued on overdue items will be excluded from the Map Library and will have their names posted at the entrance to the Map Library.

(b) The Map Librarian may temporarily exclude the Map Library access to any person who infringes any of the Map Library Regulations or who acts in any way which may interfere with the convenience of other users of the Map Library or the work of the Library staff.

(c) Offenses warranting exclusion from the Map Library for more than one day will be reported to the Head of Department, who will decide for what period of time the offender should be deprived of the use of the Map Library. In extreme cases, the Head of Department may refer the matter to the Vice-Chancellor for advice and decision on whether or not an offender should be permanently deprived of the use of the Map Library.


R7 Waiving of the regulations

The Map Librarian has discretion to waive any of the above regulations in special circumstances if he/she believes that this is desirable in order to meet the particular requirements of an individual library user and will not have a detrimental effect on the facilities offered to any other library user or the library services as a whole.
